I don't usually take the time to write reviews but I felt compelled to in this case because of the semi-negative reviews on this book. I almost didn't read the book based on the reviews - it's a good thing that I couldn't resist based on the first book in the series!

There's a lot of criticism that Tricks is too whiny, or too shallow. I just don't see it at all. She is a conflicted young fae who has lived safely among the Wyr for most of her adult life. She likes nice clothes, make up, heels and she isn't very happy that she has to give up her current life to go become the Dark Fae Queen. Is anyone surprised - I mean gosh - everyone is trying to assassinate her - she shouldn't complain about that a bit and wish to keep her current life where the most she had to worry about was the color lipstick she wanted to wear? As far as the comments about her "using too much baby talk" - I don't see that either. The only reason I noticed it at all in the book was because of reviewers' comments.

I see this as a "coming of age" story for Tricks and the fae is made of steel under all the fluffy stuff and sticks to what she knows is right. She vacillates at times and wishes for her old life at other times, but to me that just makes her more genuine. Her relationship with Tiago is awesome - what's not to like? So I say READ IT - it fully lives up to the first book...and wait til you read the third book...even better!

I don't know why I never found this series before! I have read all the others with similar characters & plots & I have to say that this is the best woven story of all my1681 lafayette favorite components I have ever seen. The other series lack the relational depth & the solid societal basis the immortals & preternaturals have in this series. I love Drago he is the perfect foundation. They are all ancient, they don't need mates or they will die, they're not all sex driven man sluts who happen upon the "lucky" female they rein yo settle down with. dragons United the Weres & that eliminated a lot of blahblahblah most books waste to much diverse time on too many spectate camps. Humans are aware of supernatural a & they have a working established existence another plus I love no hiding from the humans 3/4 of the book waste. Granted the old ones are a little cranky but they've been like superheroes for thousands of years & never really understood what they were fighting for on a personal even until they found they're mates. No wasted time "fighting the feeling" at least so far. I'm moving on to Serpents kiss I am just delighted with these scenes too. I'm so over the build up & a kiss then thy wake up the next morning books. I'm sorry but passion& great sex is part of the whole adventure & without it you feel jyped. I am delighted with this series I am delighted with the political & personal progress it's making. I love familiar characters & I don't have to start from scratch every book they pick up perfectly. And I love the wisdom of Drago even though he was a mite overbearing, he & his men/women are honorable & progressive, smart & kind at the end of the day. Very awesome series!!!

This is the second story in the Elder Races series.
Ms Harrison has created an amazing world with Immortals such as Dragons, Thunderbirds, Gryphons, and Harpies. These creatures are apart of the Wyr Demense, as well as other Demenses' such as Faeries, Witches, Goblins, and Vampyres.

This story is about Niniane also known as "Tricks" to her Wyr friends who she has been living/hiding with for the last 200 years because she is the sole survivor of a coup against her family who was the reigning Royal family of the Dark Court at the time.
When her Uncle (who lead the coup against her family) is killed by Dragos, Niniane comes out of hiding to claim her rightful spot as heir to the throne.

In her first meeting with the delegation from the Dark Court, an assassination attempt is made on her. She barely survives the attack, but thanks to her intensive training with the Sentinels, she escapes and goes into hiding.
Dragos and the Wyr court watch the assassination attempt on all the media outlets, and Tiago their best tracker and warlord goes out with the intention of finding her and bringing her back to safety in New York.

From this point of the story on there are a lot of twists and turns, and it is a wonderful adventure.

I really enjoy this series and the amazing world Ms Harrison has created.
