Suspected of killing her husband, Charity Westcott flees on the first ship out of Portsmouth, England heading for the colonies. Loathing all men after her abusive marriage, she hopes to reunite with her family in Charles Towne, but the ship ends up in Nassau. When she spots her husband's brother, who is intent on seeing her hang, boarding her ship, she jumps overboard.
Elias Dutton, missionary and son of the famous pirate, Rowan Dutton, must get to Barbados as soon as possible. His sister is in danger, and his parents have charged him with her safety. He cannot let them down again. But after rescuing a madcap woman from the bay, he now finds himself tricked into masquerading as her husband so they both can procure passage to Barbados.
Pirates, storms, shipwreck and betrayal threaten to delay the couple in their journey even as sparks fly between them. With her brother-in-law in fast pursuit, the last thing Charity wants is help from a man, especially a religious one, but she has no choice. After Elias' heart was broken by a sordid woman who nearly ruined his life, he seeks a godly woman pure as the virgin sands of the Caribbean. He believes he has found such a woman in Charity. Until he discovers she is a murderer and is now faced with two choices letting her go or turning her in to the authorities.

The realism of the characters, adventure, and suspense in "Charity's Cross" held me in it's grip, the romance was beautiful, the spiritual theme inspiring. An exquisite story of hope, forgiveness, and redemption from MaryLu Tyndall, and one I feel is her best yet!!

Charity Cross Charles Towne Belles Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) MaryLu Tyndall Katy Topping Ransom Press Books Reviews
This was my favorite book of all her sea-fearing pirate books! Great relationship building and chemistry as Elias demonstrates a genuine love to Charity who hasn't experience that in a long time. Inspiring themes of struggling with self-reliance when trust in others has been broken, of accepting help when it feels undeserved, and fighting through the shame and guilt of an abusive relationship.
For anyone that has lived through spousal abuse, this may not be the book for you. There are many remembrances and nightmares of the Charity's husband's ill treatment. For me, this story gave a very real portrayal of types of challenges faced in an abusive marriage. The scenes didn't instill fear but gave a disheartening picture of the reality many face today.
One of the most surprising elements of this story was the supernatural healing possible to those that prayed and believed. Some might see the prayers of Elias and Charity for healing as a "nice story" and never realize that these things are possible today. They do not realize they have limited the very power of God working in their lives today by minimizing the role of the Holy Spirit in the here and now. John 1412 "...whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these..." What a reminder straight from God to me today as the Holy Spirit is releasing supernatural healing in a very large church in Denver, CO that is not of a charismatic/pentecostal background. The timing is not coincidental but a consistent message of what He continues to show me now.. that healing is real, possible, and available to those that expect, press in, and believe.
With Charity's Cross, Mary Lu Tyndall closes her Charles Towne Belles series, leaving the best for last. Oldest Westcott sister Charity married for wealth, title, and security--yet the man who promised to cherish and protect her abused her instead. After years of physical, psychological, and sexual terror, Charity's bid for freedom went completely and horrendously awry. What follows is a rollicking, adventurous, faith-filled, and romantic story the likes of which I was aching for. Mary Lu Tyndall more than satisfies.
Charity, like all the Westcott sisters, is an inwardly and outwardly beautiful, multifaceted heroine. I found myself identifying with her on many levels, especially where her independent streak and her insatiable need to know why bad things happen to good people were concerned. I think the best thing about Charity's journey is how she fights for autonomy in an age and country that tells her she can't have any, but learns to claim ground and selfhood God's way. It's a lesson we all learn day by day, and Mary Lu Tyndall does a great job of painting it.
Hero Elias Dutton pulls off a wonderful combination of pious and pirate, swashbuckling and courageous yet sweet and swoon-worthy. His motivations, like Charity's, are sympathetic and sometimes wrenchingly human. Kudos to him especially for sticking with Charity even when he didn't understand why she was doing certain things, or how she fit into his life. In many places, Elias acts the way Christ does with us, providing a touching and non-preachy portrait.
As always, the secondary characters and plot are spot on. The adventures of the plot particularly kept me riveted, especially at the beginning. That is, it's fairly rare for a heroine to escape danger, yet always have the villains know exactly where she is. Kudos to Tyndall for playing with that trope. I also enjoyed the unexpected motivations and decisions of one villain in particular. Without spoiling anything, Tyndall manages to make him relatable without excusing his actions or letting readers lose the respect they have for Charity. Add in a dreadful storm, a stint from Charity as a ship's medical provider, encounters with a jungle tribe, and more, and I was completely sold.
The spiritual threads here are done beautifully, with special emphasis on the power of prayer and how God responds to us and our decisions with mercy, even when we're unbelievably stupid. Tyndall has a talent for weaving in the supernatural and miraculous without making it seem hokey, which I love her for.
There are a few grammatical issues, such as odd capitalization in places. I wanted to know a little more of Elias' story and see more of his life on land; one particular part of it, while great, seemed tacked on so the author could cash in on a popular trope. Also, this is a personal preference, but now I really want to know the story of Elias' sister, Caleigh. Maybe in a future novel (please)? Overall, you'll love this last Belles installment, and it'll have you hunting for more swashbuckling stories from Mary Lu Tyndall.
