What a marvelous find. I was looking for a little something different, a mystery, a different kind of story and the quiet graveyard suggestion caught my eye. This book delivered all that and more. I got the mystery with so many twists and turns I lost count. I got a story of an old family with more than one shocking secret and the story of a very modern family with even more. Within it a love of books. A story of the kind of love you discover by chance, through strength and when you're not even looking for it. I couldn't read and turn the pages fast enough.

I wanted to stop reading this book about 1/4 the way through but I finished the book because it was my book club's choice. It is a British story and the dialogue and events confused me throughout. I don't recommend the book.
The plot here is like a tangled ball of thread or a backlash of line on an open fishing rod, the one that appears impenetrable. The weaknesses are improbabilities, one on top of another. However, even that doesn't deter the reader from an enjoyable experience. The writing is excellent, and the events flow and spool out so smoothly, the reader is drawn in and along for the ride. Enjoy! It's well worth the time.
I loved this book and didn't want it to end, even as I rushed to find the answers to the big questions. Great characters, emotional story. I am usually not much for British/Scottish/Irish mysteries because the foreignness of the speech and I almost didn't purchase it, although it was on a list of the best books of 2016 that I was determined to read a few of. I read a lot of series mysteries and have a hard time switching from one "world" to another when I catch up and have to wait for the next one. I will definitely read more Catriona McPherson.
This is a novel where the mysteries slowly reveal themselves in a charming, small town setting with clearly drawn and engaging characters and compelling story questions. I loved the individual voices of the various characters, and found myself wanting to visit a town like this some day. Being a person who has loved books and mysteries my entire life, I found the book-note theme ingenious and fun to contemplate.

This is not your typical thriller, which would start with a body and quickly move forward. It was slower paced, but intriguing nonetheless, and I'm glad I stuck through it to the end. Loved it!
At first I thought it was just me. Why was I not excited about this book? Why would I sigh when I opened my kindle to once again try to make headway with this book? It's not me. This story just plods along, every 20 pages or so dropping another little tidbit. What is Jude running from? What is Eddy's story? Lowell's? And how much time, dear reader, do you want to waste while the author plods away? Finally, after days of trying to gain interest, and actually halfway through, do I reach the realization that I don't care. Time to delete the book and go to something more enjoyable. Not a good review, let me just say-it's boring. Nothing happens. And when you realize you don't care, you realize what a bad book it actually is.
An absolute joy, especially for those who adore mysteries set in the UK in any era. This is a cozy, ostensibly, with a few murders to solve, but the beautifully rendered Jude, Lowell, and Eddy, and their sometimes distrustful affections, provide a depth that resembles real life. Highly recommended. Am off to celebrate a wonderful new-to-me mystery writer by buying the next book.
Just don't bother, it isn't worth the payoff.

Took me weeks to get into this book. I finished other books in the time it took me to bring myself to finish this one. I only did because I feel guilty leaving books partially read on my kindle. It gives me anxiety. It started out so dull and I found the way it was written to be confusing and I had to reread sentences over and over to make sure I understood. Maybe I'm dumb.

All the mysteries in this book, while they interested me slightly whilst reading, just didn't pay off satisfyingly. It's a quaint read but just not my style. I like things I can breeze through.

**WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD**

The thing that perhaps bothered me most was the fact that Jude got together with Lowell at the end. Um..what? Where the hell did that come from? He was described as this old, rotund man who smelled foul and was dirty and lived in a dirty house. This bothered me immensely.
