The Sixth Byrne/Balzano book from author Richard Montanari, "The Killing Room", is a dark, foreboding, yet captivating thriller. Again with all of omniscient author Montanari's Byrne/Balzano series, the mean gritty streets of Philadelphia become exposed to complete horror. A badly tortured man near death but not yet dead is found in a basement of long closed Catholic Church. The victim having been left there for ten days to suffer shortly dies. Soon in another basement of a long closed church, is a little baby is found frozen in a block of ice. Before much longer another victim is discovered in another basement of closed church, having been badly tortured. Kevin Byrne and now long time partner, Jessica Balzano cannot grasp the few clues they've received. An over eager television reporter is also making things very difficult for the detectives. The one solid clue that Byrne/ Balzano seem to think may be legitimate is: 7 Churches One God. But with little information they've gleamed so far it's leading nowhere. As with the previous five Byrne/ Balzano detective thrillers from author Richard Montanari, the stories can be very dark, and incredibly intense. At times the suspense can feel overwhelming for the reader.The story is so well written it feels as if with every step taken during the case, the reader is walking along with the detectives. The characters can be brutal at times, but that stems from realism. Since being a kid growing up in Philly during the late 60's, I've seen the PPD in action. The characterizations are spot on. The novel's dialog is a gritty mixture that rolls in right off the sidewalks of Philadelphia. Can Frank Rizzo's ghost be far behind ? All six thrillers in this series have been excellent. Author Montanari has done some incredible research about the neighborhoods within the city. I consider author Montanari one of today's best thriller writers. His Byrne/ Balzano series gets me glued from the first page of each book until each thriller concludes. Reading this series has been complete enjoyment with each and every book.I'm giving 5 stars out of a possible 5 stars for the powerful, "The Killing Room". This series is not to be missed. I can't wait to jump into the next. Highly recommend them all.

Montana's is FANTASTIC!!!!!A great writer, keeps you guessing. The two police detectives are great characters and the plot and story are terrific!!I have read him before and I will continue to read his novels for as long as he writes them!!!!!!!
Unexpected ending. Hard to follow with religeos references. Book should have tried to follow a clearer story line more in tune to relaxation reading.
I'm glad that Richard Montanari's books are again being published in the US. I will enjoy catching up as his books are always exciting and characters interesting. THE KILLING ROOM is no exception. Unique characters and plot.
Really good book. The characters kept you working to keep up. I am sure I could never write and keep up with a plot that jumps around so much.
Loved this story it kept me on the edge of my seat a and couldn't put my kindle down. I would like more books like this.
I especially enjoyed this story, being that I am a Catholic from Phillly. The twists and turns pull you along from one murder scene to another. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Montanari' s work. If THE KILLING ROOM is any indication, I have found a new favorite author.
I agree with the only one star review of this date, I put down The Echo Man because it was so boring with too much detail that doesn't even pertain to the storyline, this book is the same way, so very very boring with unnecessary detail that just isn't needed so the actual storyline of the book just drags from page to page, so I think I'm done with this series.
